What's it like to live in the Junction?

The Junction grew up where several railway lines met northwest of downtown, and it was its own municipality, West Toronto, until it joined Toronto in 1909. Its main street is Dundas Street West between Keele Street and Runnymede Road, lined with brick commercial blocks from that era. Behind it are streets of Victorian and Edwardian semis and row houses, and the rail corridors still box the neighbourhood in on the north and east. Most of the housing is old and low. In the City's Junction Area neighbourhood, 55% of homes were built before 1961, about a quarter are semis or row houses, 41% are in low rise buildings and only 12% are in buildings of five or more storeys. So most rentals are flats in houses or apartments over the Dundas storefronts, alongside a few newer condos on Dundas. It is a settled neighbourhood of couples and young families. About four in ten households rented in 2021, the median resident was 40 and households averaged 2.3 people. Rent sits close to the city middle: in the 2021 census the median tenant household paid $1,460 a month for rent and utilities, against $1,500 across Toronto.Dundas West is where daily life happens: When the Pig Came Home and Junction Meats for groceries, No Frills and The Sweet Potato a few blocks west, and a run of cafés, bakeries, bars and independent shops like Type Books. The Annette Street library branch is a short walk south, and the north edge of High Park, on Bloor Street, is about 20 minutes on foot. There is no subway in the neighbourhood. The 41 Keele bus reaches Keele Station on Line 2 in about five minutes and the 40 reaches Dundas West Station in about six, and Bloor GO station, about 22 minutes on foot, puts the UP Express nine minutes from Union and 20 from Pearson Airport. The trade-off is the commute: downtown is a bus and a subway ride, not a walk.

Rent with confidence in the Junction

What Ontario tenancy rules protect, and how liv.rent keeps the process safe from first message to signed lease.

Deposits are limited

A landlord in Ontario can ask for a rent deposit of up to one month of rent, and it can only be used for your last month. Damage and pet deposits are not allowed, and the landlord owes you interest on the rent deposit every year.

Rent increases are limited

Most rents can go up once every 12 months, by no more than the provincial guideline, with 90 days of written notice. Units first lived in after November 15, 2018 are exempt from the guideline, though the landlord still has to give that notice.

Every listing is verified

Landlords complete ID verification before they can post, and you can sign the lease and pay rent through liv.rent, so there is no e-transfer to a stranger.

Many Junction rentals are flats in a house the owner lives in, and private deals like these are where scams turn up. Never send a deposit before viewing the unit and meeting the landlord, and never pay outside a platform that keeps a record. A room where you share a kitchen or bathroom with the owner may not be covered by the Residential Tenancies Act, so ask before you sign. The tenancy points above are general information about renting in Ontario, not legal or financial advice. Junction rental questions

Is the Junction expensive compared with the rest of Toronto?

About average, on the census. In 2021 the median tenant household in the City's Junction Area neighbourhood paid $1,460 a month for rent and utilities, against $1,500 across Toronto. A flat listed today asks more than that median. CMHC's citywide average for an occupied purpose built apartment was $1,916 in October 2025.

Is there a subway station in the Junction?

No. The 41 Keele bus reaches Keele Station in about five minutes and the 40 Junction-Dundas West reaches Dundas West Station in about six, both on Line 2. From Keele Station, Bloor-Yonge is about 16 minutes east.

How do you get to the airport from the Junction?

By the UP Express from Bloor GO station, near Dundas West Station, about 22 minutes on foot from Dundas and Keele or a short bus ride. From Bloor the train reaches Pearson in about 20 minutes and Union Station in about nine.

Is the Junction a good neighbourhood for families?

Yes, it is one of the west end's family neighbourhoods. Indian Road Crescent and Annette Street public schools and St. Rita Catholic School are within about 13 minutes of Dundas and Keele, and Humberside Collegiate is the local secondary. Larger rentals are usually the main and upper floors of houses.

What should I check before renting a flat in a Junction house?

Ask whether utilities are included or split with the other units, whether there is laundry you can use, and how the space is heated. Basement units should have proper windows and a second way out. If you would share a kitchen or bathroom with the owner, the Residential Tenancies Act may not cover the arrangement.

Are Junction rentals covered by rent control?

Most flats in older houses are, as long as the unit was lived in before November 15, 2018. A unit first occupied after that date, such as a newly built condo or a newly created basement apartment, is exempt from the provincial guideline, so the landlord can raise the rent by any amount with 90 days of written notice. Ask before you sign.

Is parking included with Junction rentals?

Sometimes. Some houses have a driveway or laneway spot, but much of the street parking is by permit, so ask whether a space comes with the unit and whether it costs extra.
