What's it like to live in Church-Wellesley?

Church-Wellesley runs from Yonge Street east to Jarvis Street and from Carlton Street up to Bloor, and at its centre, along Church Street, is the Village, the heart of Toronto's LGBTQ community. The rainbow crosswalks at Church and Wellesley, The 519 community centre, Glad Day Bookshop and the bars around them make it the busiest stretch of the city every June during Pride. Most people here live in towers. In the City's Church-Wellesley neighbourhood, 93% of homes are in buildings of five or more storeys, and only about half of them are condos: the rest are the purpose built rental towers of the 1960s and 1970s along Wellesley, Isabella and Gloucester, alongside newer condos on Yonge and Bloor. That makes it one of the few downtown neighbourhoods where you can rent from a building manager rather than an individual owner. It has one of the highest renter shares in the city. In 2021, three quarters of households rented, the median resident was 34, and households averaged 1.5 people, with seven in ten homes studios or one bedrooms. In the 2021 census the median tenant household paid $1,680 a month for rent and utilities, against $1,500 across Toronto.Everyday errands are easy. Loblaws fills the old Maple Leaf Gardens at Carlton and Church, with Rabba and Metro nearby, and Church Street has cafés, bakeries and restaurants from Bloor down to Carlton. Barbara Hall Park, behind The 519, holds the Toronto AIDS Memorial, and Allan Gardens is a short walk east.Transit is close at hand. Wellesley Station on Line 1 is about four minutes from Church and Wellesley, College Station about nine, and Union Station is about seven minutes south by subway. The 94 Wellesley bus and the 506 Carlton streetcar run across the neighbourhood, and most of downtown, including Toronto Metropolitan University, is walkable.

Rent with confidence in Church-Wellesley

What Ontario tenancy rules protect, and how liv.rent keeps the process safe from first message to signed lease.

Deposits are limited

A landlord in Ontario can ask for a rent deposit of up to one month of rent, and it can only be used for your last month. Damage and pet deposits are not allowed, and the landlord owes you interest on the rent deposit every year.

Rent increases are limited

Most rents can go up once every 12 months, by no more than the provincial guideline, with 90 days of written notice. Units first lived in after November 15, 2018 are exempt from the guideline, though the landlord still has to give that notice.

Every listing is verified

Landlords complete ID verification before they can post, and you can sign the lease and pay rent through liv.rent, so there is no e-transfer to a stranger.

Downtown listings are the most copied in Toronto, and a unit in an older rental tower at a price well under its neighbours is a warning sign. Never send a deposit before viewing the unit, and never pay outside a platform that keeps a record. Ontario landlords cannot refuse you because of your sexual orientation or gender identity, under the Human Rights Code. The tenancy points above are general information about renting in Ontario, not legal or financial advice. For guidance on your own tenancy, contact the Landlord and Tenant Board. How liv.rent verification works

Church-Wellesley rental questions

Is Church-Wellesley expensive compared with the rest of Toronto?

Somewhat. In the 2021 census the median tenant household in the City's Church-Wellesley neighbourhood paid $1,680 a month for rent and utilities, against $1,500 across Toronto. That covers everyone renting in 2021, including long tenancies held down by rent control, so a unit listed today asks more. CMHC's citywide average for an occupied purpose built apartment was $1,916 in October 2025.

Is Church-Wellesley the same as the Village?

Yes. The Village is the stretch of Church Street around Wellesley, and Church-Wellesley is the City's name for the neighbourhood around it, from Yonge to Jarvis and Carlton to Bloor. Some listings use one name and some the other.

What is Church-Wellesley like during Pride?

Busy. Pride Toronto takes over Church Street every June, with street closures, stages and crowds into the night, especially on the last weekend of the month. If you live on Church itself, expect noise and road closures, and plan deliveries and moves around that weekend.

Which subway stations serve Church-Wellesley?

Wellesley Station on Line 1 is about four minutes on foot from Church and Wellesley, and College Station about nine. From Wellesley, Union Station is about seven minutes south and Yonge and Eglinton about ten minutes north. Bloor-Yonge, for Line 2, is one stop up.

Can I rent from a building rather than a condo owner here?

Often, yes. About half the homes in the census neighbourhood are not condos, and most of those are in the rental towers along Wellesley, Isabella and Gloucester. These buildings were mostly occupied long before November 15, 2018, so their rents are covered by the provincial guideline, though landlords can apply to the Landlord and Tenant Board for an increase above it.

Is Church-Wellesley a good neighbourhood for families?

It suits small households best. Seven in ten homes in the census neighbourhood are studios or one bedrooms. Church Street Junior Public School and Jarvis Collegiate are both within a few minutes of Church and Wellesley, and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School is close by on Sherbourne.

Is parking included with Church-Wellesley rentals?

Often not. Some towers have underground parking at an extra monthly cost, and street parking is scarce. With Line 1 a few minutes away, most renters here do without a car.

Places, parks, schools and transit routes on this page come from OpenStreetMap. Walk times are approximate. Population, age and how many households rent come from Statistics Canada's 2021 Census, as the City of Toronto publishes it for its Church-Wellesley neighbourhood.
