Built in 2004 at a cost of $15.5 million, the Hyman Soloway Residence has a capacity of 239 students. Most students who use this facility are first-year students. The residence is named after the late Hyman Soloway (Doctor of the University, or DU), who was awarded an honorary doctorate in 1996 for his substantial contributions to the university's development. Mr. Soloway served on the university's Board of Governors from 1990 to 2004. In 1998, the University of Ottawa established the Hyman Soloway Chair in Business and Trade Law in his honour. The Chair provides a focal point for linking scholars with government lawyers and the private sector.
