Four buildings sit on the same two streets as the campus: Canvas and Pacific Terraces on Great Northern Way, and Artech and Meccanica on East 1st Avenue. If you’re after an artist-friendly home, Canvas and Artech were designed with working artists in mind.<\/p>\n

Canvas<\/a> (417 Great Northern Way) is the building most closely tied to the campus. A Vancouver Sun feature of March 15, 2014, reproduced by developer Onni<\/a>, described its 209 homes as designed for artists’ live-work use, “next door to the new” Emily Carr campus. The piece said both were expected to finish in 2016. That was a pre-construction sales feature, though, so it shows the intent rather than the finished building.<\/p>\n

Artech<\/a> (336 East 1st Avenue) is the other building designed for artists. Its liv.rent building page, read on October 20, 2026, lists 67 units over four floors, built in 1994. It describes steel-and-frame artist live\/work lofts that are double height, with a sleeping and office area, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, in-suite laundry, and a rooftop deck.<\/p>\n

The university’s own student guide describes Mount Pleasant for newcomers, with caf\u00e9s around Main and Broadway, the Vancouver Mural Festival, and parks close to campus. The Lee Building and Synchro sit at or just east of the Main and Broadway corner, and Brewery Creek is up the hill on East 6th Avenue. That student guide dates from 2020, so you’ll get the character of the area from it, not a list of current shops.<\/p>\n

There’s an off-campus option, though: on July 26, 2026, the university announced a partnership with GEC Living for off-campus student housing at GEC Kingsway, 4589 Gladstone Street, open to domestic and international students.<\/p>\n

liv.rent’s earlier campus guide, last updated May 28, 2026, says some of Mount Pleasant is within walking distance of campus. But no source measures the walk from any building above, so check each address on a map against the campus at 520 East 1st Avenue before you sign.<\/p>\n

If an increase breaks the limit or the notice rules, you don’t have to pay the unlawful part. Raise it with your landlord first.
