Certainly, landlords and property managers should look to see that a tenant can reasonably afford rent compared to how much money they make as part of their <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/liv.rent\/blog\/2021\/05\/new-to-liv-rent-tips-to-start-listing-renting-efficiently\/#screen\" target=\"_blank\">tenant screening process<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this 30% rule is often bent in high-cost of living cities such as Vancouver \u2014 so take this with a grain of salt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"296\" src=\"https:\/\/liv.rent\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/2021_06_24_Vancouver_RentReport_July_Blog-6-1024x296.png\" alt=\"Income-to-rent ratio\nAverage percentage of income spent on rent in Q2 36.6%\" class=\"wp-image-30959\" srcset=\"https:\/\/liv.rent\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/2021_06_24_Vancouver_RentReport_July_Blog-6-1024x296.png 1024w, https:\/\/liv.rent\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/2021_06_24_Vancouver_RentReport_July_Blog-6-300x87.png 300w, https:\/\/liv.rent\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/2021_06_24_Vancouver_RentReport_July_Blog-6-768x222.png 768w, https:\/\/liv.rent\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/2021_06_24_Vancouver_RentReport_July_Blog-6.png 1440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"square-foot\">Rent per square foot<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our rent per square foot metric shows you the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/liv.rent\/blog\/2020\/10\/cheapest-neighbourhoods-for-rent-in-metro-vancouver\/\" target=\"_blank\">cheapest place to rent in Metro Vancouver<\/a> by space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cheapest rent per square foot is in <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Surrey (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/liv.rent\/rental-listings\/city\/surrey\" target=\"_blank\">Surrey<\/a>, followed closely by <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Coquitlam (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/liv.rent\/rental-listings\/city\/coquitlam\" target=\"_blank\">Coquitlam<\/a>.
