This covers up to 65% of their commercial rent or property expenses, backdating to September\u00a027,\u00a02020, until June\u00a02021. <\/li><li>Canadian employers whose businesses have been affected by COVID-19 may be eligible for <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/revenue-agency\/services\/subsidy\/emergency-wage-subsidy.html\" target=\"_blank\">Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS)<\/a>, a subsidy of 75% of employee wages for up to 12 weeks, retroactive from March 15th, 2020, to June 6th, 2020.<\/li><li>The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/revenue-agency\/campaigns\/covid-19-update\/frequently-asked-questions-wage-subsidy-small-businesses.html\" target=\"_blank\">Temporary 10% Wage Subsidy<\/a> is a three-month measure allowing eligible employers to reduce the amount of payroll deductions required to be remitted to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). You do not need to apply for the subsidy, the subsidy is calculated when you remit these amounts to the CRA.<\/li><li>Businesses and individuals are eligible for <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/revenue-agency\/campaigns\/covid-19-update\/covid-19-filing-payment-dates.html\" target=\"_blank\">Income Tax-Deferred Payments<\/a> &#8211; penalties and interest will not be charged if payment requirements are made by September 1st, 2020. Filing dates have also been extended.\u00a0<\/li><li>If you already receive <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/revenue-agency\/services\/child-family-benefits\/covid-19-gsthstc-increase.html\" target=\"_blank\">Goods and Services Tax\/Harmonized Sales Tax (GST\/HST)<\/a> and have filed taxes in 2018, you have received a one-time increased payment on April 9th.<\/li><li>The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ceba-cuec.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA)<\/a> provides interest-free loans of up to $40,000 to small businesses and not-for-profits. Repaying the balance of the loan on or before December 31, 2022, will result in loan forgiveness of 25% (up to $10,000).<\/li><li>BDC, Canada\u2019s bank for entrepreneurs, and Export Development Canada (EDC) have launched the new <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bdc.ca\/en\/about\/mediaroom\/news_releases\/pages\/new-small-medium-sized-enterprise-loan-guarantee-program-help-ease-access-credit-entrepreneurs-impacted-covid-19.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Small and Medium-sized Enterprise Loan and Guarantee program<\/a> to help Canada\u2019s financial institutions provide credit and liquidity options. To access these loans, business owners must contact their primary financial institution.<\/li><li>To avoid layoffs, the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/employment-social-development\/services\/work-sharing.html\" target=\"_blank\">Work-Sharing Program<\/a> provides income support to employees eligible for EI benefits who are working a temporarily reduced work-week.<\/li><li>Expected to roll out mid-May, the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/pm.gc.ca\/en\/news\/news-releases\/2020\/04\/16\/prime-minister-announces-additional-support-small-businesses\" target=\"_blank\">Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance (CECRA)<\/a> will partner with provinces and territories, and seek to provide loans to commercial property owners who in turn will<strong> <\/strong>lower or forgo the rent of small businesses for the months of April (retroactive), May, and June.<\/li><li>For post-secondary students and recent graduates who are ineligible for CERB or for EI, the government has proposed\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/department-finance\/news\/2020\/04\/support-for-students-and-recent-graduates-impacted-by-covid-19.html\" target=\"_blank\">Canada Emergency Student Benefit (CESB<\/a>). The CESB would provide up to $1,750 per month for eligible students from May through August 2020. Renters can look into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bchousing.org\/housing-assistance\/rental-assistance\/RAP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rental Assistance Program<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bchousing.org\/housing-assistance\/rental-assistance\/SAFER\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters (SAFER)<\/a> programs, which provide ongoing rental assistance for lower income families and seniors.<\/p><p>\n\n<\/p><p><strong>Rent Payments: <\/strong>Tenants are required to resume rent payments in full on September 1st, 2020. As of November 09, 2020, rent increases effective April 2020 through the end of 2020 have been cancelled. Rent increases have been frozen until July, 2021.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Rent Repayment: <\/strong>Landlords and tenants are required to enter into a rent repayment plan for any outstanding rent from March 18th \u2013 September 1st. These payments must be agreed upon by all parties, paid monthly, and completed by July 2021.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Eviction Prohibition: <\/strong>Landlords may not issue Notice to End Tenancy for Non-Payment of Rent if the tenant resumes rent payments in full on September 1st, unless the tenant had outstanding rent payments prior to March 18th, 2020. Late payments during the emergency period are not considered \u201ccause\u201d for eviction, and landlords cannot charge fees for any missed rent during the state of emergency. It has announced a temporary rent supplement paid directly to landlords and a number of other benefits. See the full breakdown of financial support for BC Landlords and how to deal with tenants below:<\/p>\n\n\n<h4>Financial Support<\/h4>\n<p><b data-stringify-type=\"bold\">Utilities:&nbsp;<\/b><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bchydro.com\/news\/conservation\/2020\/covid-19-updates.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-describedby=\"slack-kit-tooltip\">BC Hydro<\/a>,&nbsp;<a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fortisbc.com\/about-us\/supporting-british-columbia-during-the-covid-19-outbreak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-describedby=\"slack-kit-tooltip\">FortisBC<\/a>,&nbsp;<a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epcor.com\/covid-19-canada\/Pages\/bc-customers.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-describedby=\"slack-kit-tooltip\">EPCOR<\/a>&nbsp;will be offering special assistance for customers impacted by COVID-19. This includes deferring bill payments and arranging flexible payment plans.<\/p>\n<p><b data-stringify-type=\"bold\">Rent Relief: <\/b>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bchousing.org\/COVID-19?bcgovtm=20200319_GCPE_AM_COVID_4_NOTIFICATION_BCGOV_BCGOV_EN_BC__NOTIFICATION&amp;bcgovtm=20200319_GCPE_AM_COVID_4_NOTIFICATION_BCGOV_BCGOV_EN_BC__NOTIFICATION\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Temporary Rent Supplement<\/a> is a payment of up to $500\/month that will be paid directly to landlords.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other Assistance: <\/strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/employment-business\/covid-19-financial-supports\/emergency-benefit-workers?bcgovtm=20200319_GCPE_AM_COVID_4_NOTIFICATION_BCGOV_BCGOV_EN_BC__NOTIFICATION\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BC Emergency Benefit for Workers<\/a> provides a tax-free, one time $1,000 payment for B.C. residents whose ability to work has been affected due to COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tax Deferrals and Small Businesses: <\/strong>lnformation on reducing the school property tax rate for commercial properties and other initiatives <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/assets\/gov\/employment-business-and-economic-development\/business-management\/small-business\/covid-19_small_business_supports.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"block-editor-rich-text__editable editor-rich-text__editable\" role=\"textbox\" contenteditable=\"true\" aria-multiline=\"true\" data-is-placeholder-visible=\"false\" aria-label=\"Write heading\u2026\" aria-autocomplete=\"list\">Dealing with Tenants<\/h4>\n<p><b data-stringify-type=\"bold\">Evictions:<\/b>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/housing-tenancy\/residential-tenancies\/covid-19?bcgovtm=20200319_GCPE_AM_COVID_4_NOTIFICATION_BCGOV_BCGOV_EN_BC__NOTIFICATION#Evictions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Effective April 1st<\/a>, landlords cannot give new notices to end tenancy. Existing order will not be enforced except under limited circumstances during the state of emergency.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Landlords with existing orders for eviction can take them to the courts beginning July 2, 2020, for enforcement and can enforce a writ order effective immediately.<\/p>\n<p><b data-stringify-type=\"bold\">Rent Payment Regulations:<\/b>&nbsp;Landlords and tenants may enter into a payment deferral agreement if the tenant faces difficulties paying rent. (<a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/liv.rent\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/2020-04-29_Rent-Deferral-Agreement_Final_Interactive.pdf.zip\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-describedby=\"slack-kit-tooltip\">See here for payment deferral template<\/a>.) Otherwise, payments are due the date outlined in your tenancy agreement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b data-stringify-type=\"bold\">Roommate &amp; Guest Policies: <\/b>Landlords can reasonably restrict or schedule the use of common or shared areas to support social distancing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rent Increases:&nbsp;<\/strong>While notifications of upcoming rent increases may be given, <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/housing-tenancy\/residential-tenancies\/covid-19?bcgovtm=20200319_GCPE_AM_COVID_4_NOTIFICATION_BCGOV_BCGOV_EN_BC__NOTIFICATION#rent-increases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no rent increase<\/a> is permitted until December 1, 2020. If a landlord does collect the increase amount during the period that rent increases are not allowed, the tenant can deduct the additional amount from future rent payments. As announced June 19, 2020, the Province is maintaining the moratorium on rent increases and evictions for non-payment of rent. However, other notices to end tenancy may resume effectively immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n<br>\n<h3 id=\"covid-19-landlords-ontario\"><strong>Ontario<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"block-editor-rich-text__editable editor-rich-text__editable\" role=\"textbox\" contenteditable=\"true\" aria-multiline=\"true\" data-is-placeholder-visible=\"false\" aria-label=\"Write heading\u2026\" aria-autocomplete=\"list\">Financial Support<\/h4>\n<p><strong data-rich-text-format-boundary=\"true\">Utilities: <\/strong>As of March 24th, the province has suspended time-of-use electricity pricing for 45 days. Rates for time-of-use customers are set at the lowest price, no action is required.
