Living in Vancouver, you can’t help but notice that ice cream is having a moment. Never before has it been so easy to keep your cool with an icy treat. Check out our best ice cream picks below.
We are not quite Italy with gelato on every corner, but we are moving in that beautiful direction. Though Mario’s Gelato and La Casa Gelato have been scooping up the best for decades, they’ve been destination parlors. Thankfully, peak demand (global warming silver lining?) has coaxed many others to set up shop. Arguably, it was Earnest Ice Cream that kicked off the parlor parade. Their creamy, small batch, artisanal ice cream, and hipster sensibilities draw crowds day and night, summer and winter. With 3 locations around Vancouver and 1 on the North Shore, no excuse to deny yourself a scoop of Whisky Hazelnut!
For all the vegans in the house, you have not been forgotten! In fact, most ice cream stores offer dairy free and/or vegan options nowadays. Umaluma Gelato, on the other hand, ONLY serves dairy-free options. These organic, plant-based concoctions come in a variety of innovative flavours such as Salted Caramel Sea Foam, Mojito Magik or Panda, a creamy all natural vanilla with chocolate ganache spots (darkened with activated charcoal). Try it in a house made black charcoal waffle cone- gluten-free and made with rice flour and buckwheat with a hint of maple syrup.
If ice cream isn’t enough to titillate the senses, how about a provocative name? The recently opened Perverted Ice Cream has the look and feel of a night club. Occupying a tiny space on Thurlow near Robson, the menu changes daily but options may include Brand Spanking, Matcha Macho Man, Beg for S’more and Cocoa Dependency. Rest assured, a date with this place will guarantee you a good time!
